When I was a girl, I belonged to an organization within our Baptist Church of girls and women; aptly named ‘Pioneer Girls’. There was a theme and it came from Psalm 119:105: ‘Your word is a lantern to my feet and a light upon my path.’ Every time we met, we said that as a group. For me, it has held true.
God’s word is light and it is a lantern for we often seem to dwell in darkness without knowing what our life will be in the next minute, hour, day, week… I have found memorizing the Psalms to be a light for my heart, my life, my relationship with God. When we put God’s word inside us, it makes life brighter, no matter what is outside us.
Many of the Psalms have become my favorites. There is not just one, but many for a variety of reasons. I’m not a huge fan of Psalm 119, but it does point to something very specific: God’s word, laws, instructions, commandments. Every single verse of Psalm 119 has one or more of those words contained in it. It’s a beacon for our lives if we allow God to speak to us through Scripture,
I do not encourage memorizing Psalm 119 as it has well over 100 verses. But I do encourage memorizing a Psalm for it will be a light to your soul as they have been to mine.
