We think we own this earth of ours, but really it’s being borrowed, according to Psalm 24. ‘The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and all who dwell therein. There is all kinds of not only discussion but dissension about the earth these days. We know from what science tell us it’s dying, getting much warmer than it should be, slowly being killed by those of us who think we own it.
I was watching an interview of David Attenborough recently. He had visited, dove into the beautiful Great Barrier Reef many years ago; the photography was stunning in the colors, the depth of the coral, the fish that swam in and around. Fast forward to our time. The coral is dead, grey, no life. The sight made me so very saddened at what humanity has done to such beauty. Maybe it would have died eventually, for nothing lives forever. But this amazing, alive spectacle is no more.
If we believed this is God’s earth, that it has been given to us for our use, but to cherish as well, we might be more careful in our frenzied lifestyles. Just some thoughts as this discussion will continue until the earth is no more.
